Members of the quilt crew began work last spring on this year's offering. The first decisions involved size, pattern and color ... with a world of options at our fingers, it was a challenge! Last year's quilt was very bright and modern so a more traditional (and challenging) pattern was chosen. The basic building block of this quilt is a pattern called “churn dash,” dating back to the early 19th century and was so named because of its resemblance to the inner workings of a butter churn.

Many hands made quick work of the cutting. 850 pieces! (Plus the border.) Working with triangle shapes in addition to rectangles required a little more of that pesky precision sewing but even with many different hands, it came together beautifully.

The quilt was named “Red is the New Gray” because gray has been a very popular home decor color in recent years and we found fabrics that added a lovely red to the mix.

To make the quilt appealing to a larger audience, it was decided to make it a queen size quilt (84” by 100”). It was rather daunting as we pulled more and more tables together to lay out the finished sections!

The finished quilt made it's first public appearance at the club Craft Fair and garnered much love and attention. It will next be on display at “Breakfast with Santa” on Saturday, December 3, 9am-noon. Stop by, say hello to neighbors and Santa, and pick up some raffle tickets ... this could be your quilt!
